This tracing was recorded from a full term infant at the age of 38 to 42 hours. The infant was born following a ceasarian section due to fetal distress. He underwent full ressuscitation after birth. His Apgar score was 2, 4, 4 and 7 at 1, 5,10 and 20 minutes of age. Cord pH was 6.97. The infant suffered from severe birth asphyxia with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy grade III. He died at the age of 80 hours.
The tracing demonstrate typical burst suppression pattern. The main band voltage has low voltage with short electrical burst superimposed. These bursts can differ in their amplitude and frequency. In this example the bursts are more frequent. In the full term neonate, this pattern correlates to the burst suppression pattern of the conventional EEG and usually denotes severe brain insult.
